Storage Lot Chronicles: The People, The Rigs, The Legends

A tongue-in-cheek look at life behind the gate.

Every storage lot has its stories. Some are whispered between rows of travel trailers. Some are told through a faint trail of gravel dust as someone backs in like a pro. Others live in legend — the tales of the people who have been with us for over 30 years making up the great community of RVs, boats, and trailers.

Here’s a lighthearted look at a few of the unforgettable “types” that always seem to appear in every storage lot. Maybe you’ll spot yourself — or your neighbor.

1. The Over-Prepper

They arrive armed with gloves, goggles, and a detailed checklist. They can winterize faster than most of us can find our keys. Their storage spot is immaculate — tires covered, cords coiled, and every surface gleaming. They make the rest of us think we should be doing more — and secretly, we admire them for it.

2. The Weekend Warrior

If you see someone flying down Dequindre on a Friday afternoon, smiling like school’s just out, that’s them. The Weekend Warrior rolls in late Sunday, covered in campfire smoke and joy, vowing to “clean it next weekend.” Spoiler: next weekend is another trip. Their camper tells stories through bug splatters and good memories.

3. The Boat Guy

Every lot has one. Usually tan. Often wearing sunglasses, even in the shade. The Boat Guy has a mysterious schedule — no one ever sees him leave, but somehow the boat’s gone on random Tuesdays. He’s part myth, part mechanic, and completely confident that this is the summer he’ll finally catch that record fish.

4. The Winter Worrier

They visit every week once temperatures drop, just to check on things. They dust off the cover, tighten the straps, and whisper reassuring words to their camper: “Hang in there, only three more months.” We get it — winter is tough on all of us.

5. The Clean Machine

Their rig sparkles. Even their tire shine has tire shine. They vacuum before and after every trip and wipe down every inch before heading home. They raise the bar for everyone — and we’re secretly grateful for it.

6. The Old Pro

They’ve been doing this longer than most of us have been alive. They can back in a 35-footer blindfolded, fix a hitch with a butter knife, and tell you the make and model of any camper just by looking at the taillights. Experience and duct tape are their secret weapons.

7. The “See You in Spring” Crew

They show up in late October with a sigh, a coffee, and a short to-do list that mostly says, “Cover it.” They wave goodbye to their camper like it’s an old friend heading off to college. Come April, they’re first in line at the gate, excited and ready to roll.

The Truth Is…

Every person who stores with us has their own story — their own adventures, traditions, and favorite destinations. Some are full-timers, some are weekend wanderers, and some are brand-new to the boat or RV life. Together, they make up the personality of every great storage lot — a little quirky, a little dusty, and full of good people who just love the outdoors.

Which one are you? The Over-Prepper, the Weekend Warrior, or maybe a mix of them all? Share your favorite storage lot stories or funny moment — we’d love to hear them!
